Every year many people struggle to find the perfect gift for those on their shopping list. This became such a problem that social scientists decided to investigate and run studies to find out what makes for the perfect gift.
The truth is that shoppers try really hard and put a lot of pressure on themselves to find a gift that’ll make the recipient go ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’.
It’s really the thought that counts. Find a gift that is quick and easy. It’s a happy medium that you’re after as the gift-giver. Obviously, you want to find something that you put some thought behind, but don’t go overboard.
Sometimes we over complicate things and go all out looking for the big reveal. This can be effective sometimes, but not always, and the lack of genuine delight as a reaction from the giftee can be very disappointing. Unless you are sure that the individual wants that extravagant piece of jewelry or that high tech gadget, chances are that they won’t be as thrilled as these things can be quite subjective.
The fact is that people just want a gift that they can use and that will make their life easier in some way. Gifts go wrong when gift-givers are too focused on the moment of exchange, while the recipients are thinking if they’ll actually get any use out of this.
Getting a different gift for everyone is also a bad idea. There is nothing wrong with finding a great gift and then giving it out to multiple people. Most people will never know that you gave them duplicate gifts. The sad truth about giving everyone a unique gift is that you’re going to give out a few duds here and there.
The takeaway here is to think functionality. Gifts are better when they add something to our lives.
